Statement by the Coalition for Independent and Transparent Judiciary
Tbilisi. The "Coalition for Independent and Transparent Judiciary" has released a statement, in which the Coalition "does not agree with the initiative on reducing the scope of the jury trials". "Given the background, when neither the jury trials institute has been empowered, and nor the high public interest towards high-profile cases and consequent court verdicts has abated, it is unclear why MPs who had voted for this amendment in 2013, are initiating a draft law today that intends to prohibit jury participation and therefore more public involvement in the criminal trials of high officials. It is crucial that representatives of a representative body have a systemic vision of problems and changes and that their initiatives are not tailored to specific situations and circumstances, which could be the case in this particular instance", the released statement says.
