TI published 2019-2020 Activities of Transparency International Georgia’s Committees of Concerned Citizens in Imereti.  “Improving the system of public transport in Kutaisi, resolving the problems with a drinking water supply and outdoor lamp-posts in the villages of Tskaltubo and Tkibuli, rehabilitation and paving of roads in various municipalities – this is but a small list of implemented projects advocated by the members of Transparency International Georgia’s (TI Georgia) Committees of Concerned Citizens (CCCs) to the corresponding municipalities. Tbilisi. Civil society organizations released a special statement on the restriction of freedom of religion and a discriminatory state policy. “We, organizations representing the social platform “No to Phobia!” and the “Coalition for Equality”, consider that in recent months the situation in terms of protection of freedom of religion and belief has deteriorated sharply in Georgia. The state breaches principles of secularism and equality, violates rights of non-dominant religious groups and demonstrates unequal treatment of people of different religious faiths”, - is noted in the statement, - “in this regard, religious intolerance and violation of equality, shown against Muslim citizens in the village of Buknari in Chokhatauri Municipality, as well as a discriminatory policy of authorities, applied during the celebration of holidays by religious associations in pandemic conditions, and ignorance of anti-Semitic rhetoric, demonstrated by high hierarchs of the Orthodox Church during last period of time, are particularly alarming”. Tbilisi. CSOs published a joint statement in regard to sanctions announced against opposition parties. Non-governmental organizations express their extreme concern in regard to the initiative announced by the Government, which essentially aims at imposing sanctions on opposition parties for their protest that reflected in the rejection of mandates by opposition members of the Parliament. “Such statements once again indicate that the Government does not properly realize its responsibility in the process of resolving the current crisis, while its rhetoric is perceived as threatening opposition parties - to act in accordance with directives of the Government so as not to become victims of sanctions set by the ruling party”, - is noted in the joint statement. From March to October 2020, to prevent spread of the COVID-19 infection and mitigate impact of the pandemic, the Open Society Georgia Foundation allocated funds up to USD 1.5 million. “Support, provided to address consequences of COVID-19, covered a number of directions, including protection of rights of workers, socio-economic assistance, empowerment of health care institutions and medical staff, update of ethnic minorities, people with disabilities and population of regions, free legal and psychological services for citizens, assistance of students during the process of online learning”, - is stated in the report of the organization. The Institute for Development of Freedom of Information (IDFI) and the Georgian Young Lawyers’ Association (GYLA) release a joint statement in regard to development of policy documents on public administration. In line with expiry of the Public Administration Reform Guide and the 2019-2020 Action Plan, the administration of the Government has started working on a new strategy and action plan. The process has been initiated with engagement of representatives of civil society. On November 30, there was made a presentation of a new project and online platform for volunteers - www.helpinghand.ge , organized by “Helping Hand”. “The purpose of the meeting was to discuss possibilities of online volunteering in the circumstances of the pandemic and present the updated platform to the general public. The event was attended by representatives of various NGOs, teachers of civic education and citizens interested in online volunteering. During the October 31, 2020 Parliamentary Elections in Georgia, the Local Observation Organization - Center for Development and Democracy (CDD), in partnership with the International Observation Organization - Institute for Democracy, Media and Cultural Exchange (IDEM), observed the elections with a 100-member joint observation mission covering Georgia’s every region as well as the polling stations set up abroad. “According to our joint mission, the October 31st parliamentary elections in Georgia were held in a competitive environment and with the protection of fundamental freedoms in general. The voting process took place in a relatively calm and organized environment, against the background of unit procedural violations. However, a number of shortcomings - violations were revealed during the vote counting and result summarizing process. Considering the challenges related to the COVID-19 pandemic, high voter turnout is noteworthy, which once more reaffirmed the Georgian voters’ support towards the changed electoral system, one of the main goals of which was to form a more proportionate, representative and diverse legislature”, is noted in the statement. Tbilisi. Disabled Peoples’ Organizations (DPOs) voice their concerns about the way in which the Government of Georgia is treating people with disabilities (PWDs), providing free medical care without any co-payment only to those who have severe disabilities. “According to the statement issued by 30 DPOs, this differentiation is open to interpretation and leaves many PWDs without the needed healthcare. In an open letter addressed to the Prime Minister of Georgia and the Minister of IDPs from the Occupied Territories, Labor, Health, and Social Affairs, the DPOs request that all children and adults with disabilities be provided full medical coverage without the 20% co-payment, as the latter often exceeds the amount of monthly social assistance these individuals receive and leave them and their families facing an incredible financial burden to stay safe”, is noted in the statement.
