The Center for Strategic Research and Development of Georgia (CSRDG) shares a survey of community organizations operating in Georgia in 2019-2020 years. “The purpose of the survey was to study groups operating in villages or small settlements of Georgia, their working environment and obstacles. Besides coming up with the results of the survey and accompanying recommendations, there was also a justified list of active community organizations. The list will be made public in the spring of 2021. International Society for Fair Elections and Democracy (ISFED) expresses its solidarity with women human rights defenders. “We would like to express our solidarity with women human rights defenders, who became targets of extraordinary aggression and attack after the victory gained by Nikoloz Basilashvili, a Georgian tennis player, in one of the tournaments. The fact was followed by a campaign of organized aggression on social media against both non-governmental organizations and human rights defenders, and it took place due to their public stance in regard to the case of domestic violence proceeded against the tennis player. Targeted attack, carried out on gender grounds against women human rights defenders indicates ingrained misogynistic attitudes within society and hinders the process of public disclosure of facts of violence”, - is noted in the statement. Civil society representatives would like to respond to the resumption of the dialogue between political parties and welcome the active role which our European partners have played in this process. An agreement based on the six points proposed through the mediation of European Council President Charles Michel would help us overcome the crisis. “We believe that the current political crisis can be resolved through concrete steps designed to defuse the current situation and implement institutional reforms for the country’s democratic development. We believe that a number of important steps have to be taken to resolve the crisis: In order to defuse the situation, restore trust, and create an environment conducive to negotiation opposition party leader Nika Melia and Giorgi Rurua, a shareholder in a TV station whose editorial policy has been critical toward the government, must be released from custody; A genuine electoral reform must be implemented; The Parliament’s oversight role must be strengthened and the opposition must be given certain levers of influence over the political process; Steps Must be taken toward the justice system’s independence; An effective anti-corruption reform must be implemented”. According to information released by “Rights Georgia”, on February 8, 2021, the European Commission started consultations aiming at attaining information on measures taken by EU member states to eliminate gender-based violence against women and domestic violence. “Via conducting meetings the Commission intends to obtain relevant information in order to be able to improve its work on issues related to coordinated prevention and protection against violence. On January 28-29, 2021 the CSO National Forum was held in the online format. The forum brought together up to 200 representatives of civil society and other sectors from all the regions of Georgia but also from the Eastern Partnership countries. The main focus of the forum was the role of Civil Society in promoting reforms and the challenges they face. The conference was welcomed by a representative of the EU Delegation to Georgia, Ms. Dominika Skubida. She underlined the importance of civil society as a partner in promoting reforms: “I have had the privilege to observe the development of the civil society in Georgia during the last four years. I am pleased to see how active and diverse civil society has become, especially in the regions.” In the opening panel, representatives of the Georgian Civil Society Sustainability Initiative presented key results of this four-year-long EU support program in areas such as diversification of funding sources with emphasis on state funding available for CSOs, increased cooperation between civil society and businesses in the framework of the CSR activities of the later, empowering of the youth as civic activists and promoting work of CSOs through the campaign ‘This Country is Yours’. The panel was followed by a discussion among participants about the role and challenges of civil society in the regions of Georgia. During the last panel, international experts presented their views about the current situation in civil society across the Eastern Partnership region. Background information - Georgian Civil Society Sustainability Initiative is implemented by a consortium led by Konrad Adenauer Foundation in partnership with Georgian civil society organisations: Civil Society Institute (CSI), Center for Strategic Research and Development of Georgia (CSRDG), Center for Training and Consultancy (CTC) and Education Development and Employment Center (EDEC) and aims to address key challenges of the Georgian civil society sector. The project is funded by the European Union and co-funded by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation.

Tbilisi. Georgian Institute of Politics (GIP) organized the second online movie-discussion based on the 3 following documentary videos: “Right-wing populists and the EU” by Deutsche Welle (DW), “Georgia’s Rave Revolution” by BBC, and the media report by Radio Liberty titled “Should we are afraid of modern fascism?”. The aim of the discussion was to understand to what extent could journalists prepare objective and balanced content while broadcasting the narratives and actions of the far-right groups. Also, where is the line between balanced coverage and the encouragement of radical right-wing narratives. The event was part of the public discussion series “Analysing Illiberal Tendencies in Georgia”. The discussion series, which is financially supported by the Open Society Georgian Foundation (OSGF), aims at revealing the factors causing the emergence of far-right radicalization in Georgia.
