Adjara. Today, on January 23, UNICEF Representative of in Georgia, Ghassan Khalil held a meeting at the Child Rights Center in Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University. At the meeting, the activities carried out by the center were summarized and a discussion was held about the center's development and sustainability strategy. Rector of Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University Merab Khalvashi attended the meeting. The Child Rights Center was established with the support of the Norwegian government and it provides important knowledge about children's rights to educators, representatives of academia and civil society, parents and children in the Adjara region. According to the information of Social Justice Center the European Court of Human Rights has just published its decision on Temirlan Machalikashvili case. "The Court ruled the violation of Article 2 (the right to life) in its procedural aspect and deemed the investigation as ineffective.  It is essential that the violation of investigation standards in relation to the right to life established by the Court will serve as the ground for reopening the case and relaunching an investigation at the national level which hopefully will provide legal means to the Machalikashvili family to seek justice". Media Advocacy Coalition responds to the verdict ruled by the Tbilisi Court of Appeal on January 16, 2023, according to which those convicted of committing organized group violence on media representatives on July 5, 2021, were acquitted, and the sentence imposed by the Court of First Instance was reduced. The verdict represents another step taken against journalists, freedom of expression, and democratic processes. The Media Advocacy Coalition once again calls on the authorities to ensure the effective protection of journalists' rights, including holding accountable the organizers and participants of the July 5, 2021 group attack on the media. Tbilisi. IDFI's report assesses the proactive access of public information in Georgia as of November-December 2022 and outlines the main trends and tendencies of proactive access to information compared to previous years. The report also includes proactive transparency ratings of public institutions. In 2022, the average compliance rate of proactive accessibility of public information is 60%, 4% higher than in 2021 and it 11% lower compared to the same indicator from 2014; In 2022, only three public institutions (Financial-Analytical Service, National Statistics Service, and the National Center for Educational Quality Enhancement) had fully (100%) published information in compliance with the requirements of the relevant legal act; Among central public institutions, the lowest compliance was demonstrated by the Administration of the Government (34%), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (35%), and the Office of the State Minister of Georgia for Reconciliation and Civic Equality (30%). Adjara. More than 20 historians from the region and European countries visited the site of the mass shooting of the Great Terror of 1937-1938 found near Batumi. After that, the participants moved to the monastery of the diocese of Batumi and Lazeti and got acquainted with the remains preserved after the exhumation. The visits were organized by the IDFI. Tbilisi. In 2022, ASB Georgia, along with its partners, successfully implemented "UKR Cash Transfer Program", which aims to aid Ukrainian families in Georgia. In the period of September-December, total of 8,793 vouchers were distributed, which amounted to 2,066,355 Gel. Monthly cash vouchers addressed families’ immediate needs and targeted vulnerable groups: Persons with disability, families with elderly people, families with many children and single headed households. Tbilisi. The Government of Georgia will provide one-time financial aid to vulnerable Ukrainian families with children with the support of UNICEF. In total, more than 3,000 Ukrainian children will receive financial aid to help them cope with the challenges related to winter. Families that arrived in Georgia after 1 February 2022 will receive 470 Georgian GEL per child. Adjara. Batumi introduces a new approach to waste management aiming to reduce and sort municipal waste for recycling. The new waste management plan builds on the partnership of Batumi City Hall and UNDP’s Accelerator Lab resulting in a 16-fold increase in plastic waste collection in a year.
