On 18 April, Transparency International Georgia will file suit in Tbilisi City Court to defend the rights of 24 journalists from TV companies Mtavari, Formula and TV Pirveli as well as On.ge, who suffered injuries during the 5 July 2021 event, as the state failed to fulfill its constitutional duty to ensure safety of their activity. According to the information of the UNICEF, Children with disabilities, who previously resided in the Kojori institution will benefit from a family type environment and quality care services. Within the cooperation of UNICEF, the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia, and the National Center for Teacher Professional Development, interactive webinars will be conducted for teachers, resource officers, psychologists, and social workers working with Ukrainian students.  The information meeting was held regarding this project, attended by UNICEF Representative in Georgia Ghassan Khalil, Deputy Minister of Education and Science Valerian Gobronidze, and Head of the National Center for Teacher Professional Development Berika Shukakidze. Institute for Development of Freedom of Information shares a handbook on Open Local Government and Public Ethics. “The guide includes information on rules of ethics in public service, accountability, transparency and citizen participation mechanisms, reviews relevant local legislation, institutional mechanisms and good practice. The guide analyzes in detail the risks of corruption, the principles and standards of transparency, the mechanisms implemented in terms of citizen participation and the existing challenges for local authorities”. Racha-Lechkhumi. Taso Foundation is visiting target villages as part of the Women’s Economic Empowerment project. On April 15, the Foundation held a working meeting the village of Utsera of Oni Municipality. The meeting was dedicated to discussing project details, identifying local needs and planning future activities. Taso Foundation is implementing the project in Shida Kartli, Samegrelo, Guria, Imereti and Racha-Lechkhumi regions with the support of the UN Women and the Norwegian Government. European Union in Georgia publishes the blogpost: Seventeen-year-old Samay against early marriage – young activist keeps on struggling for decent education and development of her peers. “Seventeen-year-old Samaia counts herself lucky that she isn't forced to get married young. She wants other girls to have the same opportunity to finish their school and pursue further education so, she became an activist to defend their rights. The first steps of her activism started at a training organised by one of our projects. Since then, she contributes to her community, and tries to be an example for other young women”. On April 14, IDFI submitted a legislative proposal to the Parliament of Georgia about amendments and additions to the Law of Georgia - “On the National Archival fund and the National Archives.” “The legislative proposal provides that, researchers will be able to access and use archival documents containing personal data for scientific and research purposes, regardless of time period”. Tbilisi. UNDP and the UK Government help the Agency for State Care and Assistance for the (Statutory) Victims of Human Trafficking to expand its services for the wider community with a focus on women and underprivileged groups.  The results of the six-month initiative were discussed at the meeting on 15 April, bringing together the representatives from civil society, the donor community and experts. Participants met Vivian Loonela, Head of the European Commission's Representation in Estonia. She briefed on the importance of the EU for Estonia.  Participants had an opportunity to meet Marko Mihkelson, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee. The Coalition for an Independent and Transparent Judiciary comments on the working group set up in the Parliament of Georgia on judicial reform. “It is unfortunate that information about the working group format is closed to the public. Local NGOs working on justice issues, international missions and other stakeholders are not invited to participate in the group, therefore, the process is non-inclusive. The ruling party has so far not recognized the main challenge in the judiciary, the existence of an influential group of judges; hence, the reforms carried out so far have been mainly fragmentary and have dealt with procedural issues. Tbilisi. Georgia joins 57 countries in preparations for the Stockholm+50 conference in Sweden on 2-3 June. This global event will commemorate 50 years since the UN Conference on Human Environment when environmental protection first appeared on the UN General Assembly’s agenda in 1972. Planned in April, the consultations will involve wide circles of Georgia’s society to ensure that everyone has a say in the transformation of environmental protection, climate action and green recovery… The national consultations in Georgia are organized by UNDP with assistance from the Swedish Government. Kvemo-Kartli. A two-day training on “Ethical media coverage of women’s rights and LGBTQI issues” was held for media representatives in Marneuli. The training covered issues and topics such as gender equality on a workplace, gender-sensitive reporting, the sensitivity and responsibility of reporting on violence against women and LGBT people, definition of terms and gender-neutral vocabulary. The trainings are carried out by the Georgian Charter of Journalistic Ethics with support of UN Women within the framework of the project “Ending Violence against Women and Girls in Georgia”, implemented by UN Women and UNFPA with the support of the European Union. Tbilisi. According to the information of the TI, a bill on the amendment to Law on the Elimination of Violence Against Women and/or Domestic Violence, and the Protection and Support of Victims of Such Violence has been introduced in the Parliament of Georgia and assigned to parliamentary committees for consideration. This legislative initiative envisages significant changes in terms of protection of rights of victims of violence. A status of victim will no longer be required for the use of shelter. Read more...
