Working Group Recommendations for Improving the Penitentiary Legislation
Tbilisi. The working group
consisting of NGO and state representatives and independent experts has
presented the recommendations for improving the penitentiary legislation. The
meeting has particularly focused on increasing the inmates' access to
healthcare, introducing longer visits, and improving the mechanisms of legal
services and identification of inhumane treatment.
Article 42 of the Constitution has formed the working group
in September, after the prison scandal. The working group includes Georgian
Young Lawyers' Association, international organization "Penal Reform
International", Human Rights Protection Center, EC Delegation and the
Ministry of Corrections and Probation of Georgia. EWMI G-PAC has funded this
project of Article 42 of the Constitution as part of the Open Grant Project.
