Conference: E-Learning in Georgia
Tbilisi. On March 14, the Civil Society Institute, with the support of the European Union, organized a conference: "E- Learning in Georgia”.
The purpose of the conference was to present – appraise current situation in Georgia and to discuss about its future prospects. The conference was attended by Teimuraz Murgulia, a Deputy Minister of Education of Georgia, Genadi Margvelashvili, a Deputy Chairman of the relevant Parliamentary Committee, as well as representatives of donor, international, local non-governmental organizations and a private sector.
"This conference will help us realize what is going on in terms of E-learning - what has been achieved and what we should do in the future”, stated Vazha Salamadze, the Director of the Civil Society Institute. Teimeraz Murgulia, a Deputy Minister of Education of Georgia, spoke about several initiatives of the Ministry of Education and focused on three important components. The Deputy Minister considers that E-learning is very important for the Georgian diaspora, especially while teaching them the Georgian language. Despite the fact that schools have been adapted intensively to allow people with disabilities to acquire education, so far not everyone manages to go to a public school, therefore, E-learning may facilitate their education, noted the Deputy Minister.
A similar opinion was expressed by Genadi Margvelashvili, a Deputy Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Education. According to him, besides individuals that left for abroad, this method of learning is important for citizens living in mountainous regions, ethnic minorities, people with disabilities.
Those working in the field of E-learning made presentations at the conference. Based on the information provided by Simon Janashia, during the last 5 years 25 million people went through the online course worldwide. According to him, this method of learning gives an opportunity to universities to include lectures of well-known and highly qualified teachers in their training program. Presentations were also made by Sandro Dolidze, the Executive Director of the portal "Nebula” ("Nebula” is designed for entrant students and counts 16 thousand of them registered) and Giorgi Jibladze (Educare Georgia, which is a partner of Khan Academy in Georgia and has a lot of video lectures translated). Representatives of the Technical University, TSU, ISU, Givi Zaldastanishvili American Academy introduced their experience to the audience too, while the employees of the Civil Society Institute spoke about 8 E-learning programs of the organization.
