The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees was established on December 14, 1950 by the United Nations General Assembly. The agency is mandated to lead and co-ordinate international action to protect refugees and resolve refugee problems worldwide. Its primary purpose is to safeguard the rights and well-being of refugees. It strives to ensure that everyone can exercise the right to seek asylum and find safe refuge in another State, with the option to return home voluntarily, integrate locally or to resettle in a third country. UNHCR established its presence in Georgia in 1993, to provide emergency humanitarian assistance to internally displaced persons (IDPs) who had fled armed conflict in Abkhazia in 1992-93. The UNHCR operation in Georgia has since then assisted the Government to establish asylum procedures and provide protection and integration support for refugees, as well as to implement international conventions on preventing and addressing statelessness. The objective of UNHCR`s engagement is that the rights of persons of concern - asylum seekers, refugees, the internally displaced and stateless persons - are respected, protected and ensured, that their basic needs are addressed and that human security is enhanced.
The intern will have the opportunity to familiarize herself/ himself with UNHCR`s activities in relation to all these groups. The position is supervised by the Associate Protection Officer who provides the incumbent with necessary guidance and advice.
