Summary of program:
Georgian Media Enhance Democracy, Informed Citizenry and Accountability Program (G-MEDIA), funded by USAID, is to improve the public's access to a range of news and information sources by developing a more politically balanced, editorially independent, professional and viable media sector that reaches audiences across Georgia through diverse delivery channels. The program seeks to raise the quality and diversity of media content and broaden delivery channels; improve professionalism, including through university journalism education; depoliticize the regulatory environment and strengthen journalists' capacity to address infringements to their rights and breaches of professional ethics; and improve the viability of media outlets. The G-MEDIA program is funded until October, 2014.
Summary of position:
The Senior Journalism Adviser is a Tbilisi-based full time position and reports to the Chief of Party. He/She provides a high level of professional journalism expertise to all IREX G- MEDIA activities, partnerships and training.
Specific duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
Description of responsibilities:
** Work with media outlets to improve the quality and quantity of professional, independent news and public affairs reporting.
** Work with G-MEDIA subgrantees (media organizations) in order to encourage the production and publication of content which meets high journalistic standards.
** Conduct on-going monitoring and evaluation of Georgian media in order to identify deficiencies in professional journalism practices and ethics.
** Identify opportunities for G-MEDIA assistance, in the form of training, mentoring and other professional development activities in order to build the skills of journalists and media outlets.
** Advise G-MEDIA staff and partners on issues related to the status of professional journalism in Georgia, the editorial performance of Georgian media businesses, and the value and effectiveness of program activities.
** Supervise G-MEDIA training staff and consultants in order to provide assistance, which addresses deficiencies in media outlets and the performance of journalists and editors.
** Oversee the evaluation of training provided to subgrantees and journalists by consultants and trainers.
** Mentor media outlets on new programming and ethical journalism practices.
** Participate in program planning and development of media assistance strategies.
** Contribute to G-MEDIA programmatic reporting as directed by the Chief of Party.
Qualifications:
** Extensive experience as a professional journalist. Additional experience in news management (editor, senior producer preferred)
** Experience in the design and implementation of journalist education and training
** Experience in election-related reporting is preferred
** Experience in international media development preferred
** Ability to supervise a broad range of media development activities, including education at both university and practicing professional levels
** Demonstrated ability to produce high quality (print or broadcast) professional quality news and public affairs content
** University degree
** Fluency in Georgian and English languages, both spoken and written
** High degree of computer literacy
** Familiarity with Georgian media landscape
** Strong presentation skills
** Self-motivated and result oriented
** Team player.
