Chemonics International, Inc. is seeking to recruit a Publications Specialist to assist in the preparation of reading materials for primary school students.
Period of performance: May 2014 - April 2015

Background:
The purpose of the USAID Georgia Primary Education Project (G-PriEd) is to provide comprehensive assistance to the primary education system to improve reading and math competencies of Georgian and ethnic minority students. G-PriEd collaborates closely with the Georgian Ministry of Education and Science (MES) to support instructional improvements, improve standards and testing, increase the use of technology and instructional materials and build the capacity of Georgian teachers to deliver the new math and reading instructional approaches. Through G-PriEd's interventions, Georgian children will have access to the resources and support to develop functional reading and math skills that will prepare them to be active learners ready to attain higher-order skills and knowledge.
Purpose of this SOW:
G-PriEd is committed to providing a variety of quality reading materials to the primary students in its target schools. Materials include: leveled supplementary readers, reading activity cards and student newspapers. The Publications Specialist will work closely with the G-PriEd Reading Improvement Director to select, prepare, and finalize these publications. The Reading Improvement Director will have the final approval on all reading products.
Principal duties and responsibilities:
1. In the publication of supplemental reading materials, including leveled readers, newspapers, and activity cards, coordinate the following activities:
** Selection of materials
** Translation
** Editing
** Illustrations
** Formatting
2. At each stage of material development, check for accuracy:
3. Provide the G-PriEd Reading Improvement Director with final proofs of each stage of development
4. Coordinate with G-PriEd's procurement officer to select printer/publisher
5. Liaise with the publisher
6. Coordinate with G-PriEd's Communications Officer to submit the materials to USAID and the MES for approval
7. Coordinate with G-PriEd's Deputy Chief of Party and Procurement officer for distribution of materials
8. Other duties as assigned by the Chief of Party.
Work week: Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
Staff reporting: The Publications Specialist will report to the Reading Improvement Director.
Required qualifications/experience:
1. Experience - A minimum of 5 years of professional work experience in publishing or other comparable experience in children's literature. Knowledge of current general education system in Georgia required.
2. Education - Bachelor's degree
3. Language skills - Fluency in verbal and written Georgian and English required. Knowledge of Russian, Azeri and/or Armenian is an asset.
4. Computer skills - Advanced skills in using Microsoft Word and Excel and electronic communications programs required. Experience using In-Design preferred.
5. Technical skills. Knowledge of publishing in Georgia. Experience working with the production of children's reading materials. Creativity and artistic abilities are assets.
6. Interpersonal skills - Strong interpersonal skills (e.g., tact, diplomacy, and patience) in the context of dealing with expatriate and local staff members, as well as with project stakeholders, USAID, other donors and government representatives required. Demonstrated ability to live and interact in different cultural settings and possession of strong team building/management skills and professional maturity required.
7. Self-Motivation and Guidance - Demonstrated initiative and self-motivation in handling assigned tasks in fast-paced environment with deadlines required.
