Danish Refugee Council (DRC) has worked in the South Caucasus since 1996 in addressing the displacement of approximately 900,000 IDPs in the region as a result of three main conflicts (in South Ossetia, Abkhazia and Nagorno-Karabakh). According to the UNHCR in Georgia, as a result of the conflicts in Abkhazia and South Ossetia, 262,704 people remain displaced. In the continued absence of a comprehensive resolution to this "frozen conflict", Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) continue to be prevented from returning to their places of origin. Currently DRC works through a number of offices in Georgia (including a main office in Tbilisi) in the following sectors:
- Shelter rehabilitation (individual houses and apartment blocks);
- Livelihood and economic self-reliance activities (self-reliance, business and SME support);
- Food-security grants and individual aid to extremely vulnerable individuals;
- Rehabilitation of community infrastructure via community mobilization projects;
- Capacity building of Government bodies at the central and municipal levels;
- Protection monitoring and advocacy.
