The Georgia Hazelnut Improvement Project (G-HIP) was developed to introduce a systematic approach to address current structural and process-oriented challenges in the Georgian hazelnut sector. G-HIP`s project activities will be implemented through an Alliance between USAID, Ferrero, and CNFA, leveraging the partners` technical and financial resources to increase sustainable capacity and postharvest infrastructure within the sector. A key focus of G-HIP`s interventions is the lack of market infrastructure related to HDS facilities, preventing the assurance of product quality. Another major systemic issue that G-HIP will focus on is the premature harvest of crops, which leads to lower product quality and yields. To address these challenges, G-HIP will support and work through two Georgian sectoral associations (GHGA and HEPA) to improve the quality and quantity of hazelnut production, promote the establishment and use of appropriate postharvest and processing activities, organize producers to better access processors, and to introduce a multi-tiered quality-based pricing system to reward producers for higher quality products.
