Tbilisi. The Public Defender of Georgia responds to the fact of restriction of freedom of assembly of railway workers.
"For the second day, due to changes in labor conditions, there is a hunger strike held at the administrative building of the JSC "Georgian Railway”. On August 15, 2017, representatives of the Public Defender of Georgia visited the action and performed its monitoring twice. According to the appraisal of the Public Defender, participants of the rally are unlawfully deprived of the right to set up a tent, which prevents them from the process of complete realization of freedom of assembly”, - reads the statement.
The Public Defender calls on the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia to ensure introduction of lawful principles, related to freedom of assembly, as soon and efficiently as possible in its activities. The Public Defender considers that it is important to take appropriate measures in regard to the August 15 incident in due course and, in the future, under conditions of legitimate circumstances, to not prevent participants of this and other rallies from using a tent and realizing freedom of assembly.
