Tbilisi. Green Step implements the project “WIN” and plans to involve in it more than 50 women struggling to establish themselves in the labor market. The project is funded by the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs Polish Aid - "Polska Pomoc Rozwojowa 2021". The aim of the project is to help them enhance their various business opportunities and connect to an international network. Tbilisi. According to the Women’s Information Center, in 2017, there was ratified the so-called “Istanbul Convention” in Georgia. A group of experts on action against violence against women and domestic violence (GREVIO) at the Council of Europe carries out monitoring of implementation of commitments made. Tbilisi. Women entrepreneurs living in the region of Samegrelo shared their stories about their experiences and challenges in the PechaKucha format with an audience in Zugdidi. The world-famous platform PechaKucha Nights held in Zugdidi for the first time and dedicated to the International Day of Rural Women. Six women entrepreneurs participated in the event. Along with introducing their own businesses, they talked about the important role that rural women entrepreneurs play in the development of their communities and regions. Tbilisi. October 15 is the International Day of Rural Women. In regard this day, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) summed up results of a competition of business ideas of women entrepreneurs, in which more than 600 rural women participated. “Winning business ideas include concepts of production of solar water heaters, submitted from Martvili, development of eco-tourism, submitted from Natanebi, publication of fabric books for children, submitted from Rustavi, and 24 other projects that serve local economic development and participation of women. Guria. Kaori Ishikawa, the UN Women Country Representative in Georgia, met in Ozurgeti with the representatives of the Association of Georgian Girl Scouts “Dia” and their partner organization in Guria. “With UN Women support, the Association of Georgian Girl Scouts Dia is implementing the training on violence in Guria, Kvemo Kartli and Tbilisi. The sessions are covering the issues of sexual abuse, bullying, early and forced marriage, family violence and more. The Public defender of Georgia published a report – ‘Impact of COVID 19 pandemic on conflict-affected women and girls.   ‘The present report provides results of research conducted by the Public Defender’s Office of Georgia. Samtxkhe-Javakheti. A two day seminar was conducted for Georgian media representatives in Borjomi. “The seminar was attended by 20 journalists. Participants reviewed the gender statistics and indicators produced and disseminated by Geostat. They also discussed how to use such tools in practice. At the same time, Geostat representatives listened to the journalists’ feedback, which can be used to improve accessability of gender statistics in the future”. Part of civil society organizations and political parties of Georgia address a letter to Kakha Kuchava, the Chairman of the Parliament. “We, the organizations working on human rights and activists have been fighting for gender equality for many years. The violence, committed by Shalva Papuashvili and Irakli Zarkua against women politicians on July 18, 2021, renders the success achieved in the fight for equality meaningless. The silence and inaction of the Chairman of the Parliament in regard to this issue is unacceptable, furthermore, it encourages violence. We urge you to use all available mechanisms in order to respond adequately and make sure that the abusive Members of Parliament - Shalva Papuashvili and Irakli Zarkua are held accountable for insulting and violent actions taken by them against female Members of Parliament”, - is noted in the joint statement. UN Women and the ISET Policy Institute release the research on the labor rights of employed mothers. “Only 3 per cent of the employed women in Georgia are legally entitled to enjoy fully compensated maternity leave. Exceptions occur when employers pay additional compensation voluntarily. The state compensation for maternity leave is GEL 167 per month, which is less than the minimum subsistence level. The results of the research show that Georgian labour legislation sets different standards for different groups of employees. Paid maternity leave is also unequally available to women and men, which is why most women give up their professional activities. Women are typically also responsible for family affairs, so during their childbearing years, they are seen as unproductive, less valued employees. Social Justice Center considers support of “Guardians of Rioni Valley” for the violent rally unacceptable. “For us, the Save Rioni Valley Movement was a unique attempt of democratic self-organization of our citizens in recent years, which used to give proper naming to the logic and order of unequal and inhuman economic and political development of the country since independence. However, recent decisions of leaders of the movement, unfortunately, do not leave us the opportunity to remain again allies of the Save Rioni Valley Movement in the fight against the unfair, non-transparent and undemocratic energy policy”. Women’s Information Center presents an alternative report on the implementation of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, prepared for the CEDAW Committee in 2021. “The initial draft of the report was prepared by the NGO Women's Information Center, and 29 civil society organizations working on gender equality and women's rights in Georgia were involved in the final drafting of the report. The national rugby team of Georgia, the Lelos, will raise awareness on ending violence against women by wearing the UN Women logo on their jerseys as they compete against the reigning World Champion South Africa team on 2 and 9 July. „South Africa’s matches first since they won the Rugby World Cup (RWC) in 2019, the games will also be the first between Georgia and South Africa since they two sides last met in the 2003 RWC. According to information released by the Women's Movement, on June 21, while reviewing the bill on amendments to the “Election Code of Georgia” of the Organic Law of Georgia through the second reading, the Legal Affairs Committee of the Parliament of Georgia substantially changed the rule of compiling party (proportional) lists for local self-government elections. As a result of the amendment a political party will be required to compile a party list for all local self-government elections, to be held until 2028, so that at least one out of three candidates is a representative of a different sex. According to the organization, this initiative substantially deteriorates the existing norm of the Electoral Code, which obliges a political party to have every second candidate of a different sex on its list submitted for general elections of local self-government bodies, to be held until 2028. Part of civil society organizations calls on the Parliament not to support the initiated amendment at the plenary session since it is going to weaken representation of women at the local level, hinder achievement of essential equality and fulfillment of international commitments. The present document is a special report of the Public Defender of Georgia developed under the Femicide Monitoring Mechanism and the crimes analyzed in the report are committed in 2019. „Problems related to the complex fight on violence against women and domestic violence and lack of coordination between state agencies is an obstacle for prevention of marginal manifestation of gender violence, femicide. We should underline separately that specific measures in relation to social work in fight on violence against women and domestic violence have not took place and social service is still formally involved in proceeding of cases related to violence against women and domestic violence.
