Tbilisi. The International Day in Support of Victims of Torture is celebrated on June 26. Every year GYLA celebrates the day with various different activities. This year Georgian Young Lawyers’ Association facilitated a lecture/discussions at Ivane Javakhishvili State University in Tbilisi addressing the following issues: What is qualified as torture and inhumane treatment (according to the ECHR practice); The reasons why torture and inhumane treatment has become a systemic problem; Current situation in penitentiary establishments; Rehabilitation of victims of torture and corresponding state strategy; Whether acts of torture are investigated effectively; Public approach towards torture and inhumane treatment, and whether raising public awareness is necessary; prevention of torture and inhumane treatment.
The Public Defender of Georgia, representatives of the Ministry of Corrections and Legal Assistance, the office of the prosecutor, NGOs, media, students and other stakeholders contributed to the discussions.
