Tbilisi. The Tolerance and Diversity Institute
has released a statement on funding of religious confessions. "The
Institute believes that in view of the need to protect the constitutional
principles of secularity, freedom of religion and equality of rights, it is crucial
that the Government of Georgia stops making decisions on religious minorities
in a "closed regime". At the same time, we urge the Government to
launch consultations with a wide spectrum of religious unions, Public Defender
and CSOs working on the protection of freedom of religion, and, as a result of
consultations, to (a) revise already made decisions upon need and (b) to
promote civil integration in Georgia and improve the tolerant environment, to
develop a strategy of relations with religious unions," says the
statement.
