Disaster Assistance to Kakheti Farmers

TBILISI.  More than 30 villages in Kakheti will receive assistance from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to overcome the impact of the recent natural disaster.
UNDP-commissioned consultants and agriculture specialists are travelling to Gurjaani, Telavi, Kvareli and Lagodekhi districts and help farmers to take care of the damaged vineyards and fruit gardens. The consultation teams include qualified professionals from the Agrarian University of Georgia and the Agriculture Extension Centre at the Kachreti Professional College.
Up to 700 farmers so far have received hands-on knowledge and practical training in plant treatment, pest use and vineyard recovery. By the end of September, 1500 farmers will receive consultations and training, and the demonstration works will cover 600 agriculture plots.
The programme will continue through December 2012 to help farmers implement plant protection measures and accurately use pesticides and fertilisers. Agro-business specialists will advise on reorganising agriculture businesses to reduce damage, minimise financial loss and provide recommendations on business development.
UNDP launched the assistance programme in Kakheti after the 19 August hurricane heavily damaged vineyards and gardens in four districts of the region directly affecting more than 17 thousand households.
UNDP has been active in Kakheti since 2006 assisting economic development, promoting professional education and establishing agriculture extension service for the farmers.
