Tbilisi. On September 14-15-16, the annual international clean-up campaign "Clean Up the World” was conducted in many countries worldwide. The campaign was established in 1992 at the initiative of UNEP and is held every September, hosted by up to 130 countries. The motto of the World Campaign in 2012 was: Our Country…. Our Planet… Our Responsibility
It is the third time that Georgia is participating in this event. The organizer of the campaign is the Non-governmental Consortium – Greens Movement of Georgia/Friends of the Earth – Georgia and "EcoVision”, a Union for Sustainable Development which is carrying out its activities in the framework of the Project – "Clean Up Georgia – Raising of Public Awareness and Involvement in Solid Waste Management Improvement”.
On 14-15-16 September, within the framework of the Campaign, the right bank of the Kura river in the settlement of Ponichala, Dighomi area in the section of River Dighmula, the River Vere ravine adjacent to the children’s park of Mziuri, Vake park, Dighomi forest and park, territories adjacent to Tbilisi Sea, as well as the Djvari Monastery were cleaned.
Clean-up events were held in all self-governing cities and municipalities of the country, organized by local coordinators of the Project.
All throughout Georgia, the representatives of local municipalities and Sakrebulos (Councils), students from different universities, secondary school pupils, local residents, various public and political organizations, foreign volunteers, the Embassy of Estonia, representatives of the Sheraton Metekhi Palace Hotel and Sun-Yoga Tbilisi Company participated in the aforementioned campaign.
The Project is implemented with the assistance of the Ministry of Environment Protection of Georgia with financial support of the Swedish International Development Agency (Sida).
