In West Georgia, specifically in the Guria, Samegrelo and Imereti regions, the USAID YES-Georgia program visited local greenhouses, cafés, guest houses, flower shops, wine cellars, and artisan establishments to let women know about its entrepreneurship and soft skills training program. More than 60 women registered to participate in the training program. By 2024, USAID YES-Georgia aims to provide 2,600 women with greater access to quality education, training, and business development opportunities. UN Women Georgia in partnership with the Administration of the Government of Georgia is conducting capacity development training on victim-centered investigation of sexual harassment in the civil service. “The aim of this training is to strengthen capacities of public servants on effective implementation of internal complaints’ mechanisms on workplace sexual harassment, including on investigating sexual harassment cases with a victim centric approach. During the 2-day training, participants will strengthen capacities on effective operationalization of internal mechanisms on sexual harassment, including on investigation of sexual harassment cases with a victim centric approach, as well as international standards and best practices in the area. The training brings together 18 public servants from different government entities. The training is conducted within the framework of the “Good Governance for Gender Equality in Georgia” (GG4GEG) project generously funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Norway”. Tbilisi. On May 6 held the presentation of two studies on public attitudes toward LGBTQ people and their human rights and legal protection in Georgia. “The LGBTQI people remain one of the least protected and most marginalized social groups in Georgia. They face discrimination and violence, while the protection and realization of their rights remain a challenge.  On the other hand, recent research reveals that negative public attitudes towards the LGBTQI community have been decreasing in the last five years. A series of studies were conducted with assistance from the Government of Sweden and the United Nations support. The event was organized with support from the Swedish Government and three UN agencies – UN Women, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA)”. Shida Kartli. Up To 10 Journalists Visited the women green entrepreneurs of Gori Municipality within the framework of the EU-supported media tour "Discover Social and Green Entrepreneurs in Gori". The Aim of the media tour was to introduce local green and social business initiatives to the general public and to highlight the results of EU and CENN activities in the municipality. Guria. On May 2, UN Women and the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of Norway to Georgia Helen Sand Andresen visited the Women's Self-Help Group in the Chkhakaura village of Chokhatauri Municipality as part of the Women's Economic Empowerment Project. “The guests heard from rural women about the benefits of being involved in the project and the needs at the local level, which they are working together to address. At the end of the meeting, they viewed traditional handicrafts and tasted local dishes”. Tbilisi. A meeting on the rights situation of women and girls representing non-dominant ethnic groups in Georgia was held in cooperation with the Public Defender’s Office and the United National Population Fund (UNFPA) on April 28, 2022. Two special reports were presented at the event. “One report concerns sexual and reproductive health and rights of women and girls of ethnic minorities; the second report reviews the harmful practice of early/child marriage in Kvemo Kartli and key findings of the study of the relevant attitudes. The study showed that a number of social-cultural factors, primarily gender roles and sexuality-related stigma, often lead to the violation of sexual and reproductive rights of women and girls of non-dominant ethnic minorities. European Union in Georgia publishes the blogpost: Seventeen-year-old Samay against early marriage – young activist keeps on struggling for decent education and development of her peers. “Seventeen-year-old Samaia counts herself lucky that she isn't forced to get married young. She wants other girls to have the same opportunity to finish their school and pursue further education so, she became an activist to defend their rights. The first steps of her activism started at a training organised by one of our projects. Since then, she contributes to her community, and tries to be an example for other young women”. UNDP and the UK Government help the Agency for State Care and Assistance for the (Statutory) Victims of Human Trafficking to expand its services for the wider community with a focus on women and underprivileged groups.  The results of the six-month initiative were discussed at the meeting on 15 April, bringing together the representatives from civil society, the donor community and experts. Kvemo-Kartli. A two-day training on “Ethical media coverage of women’s rights and LGBTQI issues” was held for media representatives in Marneuli. The training covered issues and topics such as gender equality on a workplace, gender-sensitive reporting, the sensitivity and responsibility of reporting on violence against women and LGBT people, definition of terms and gender-neutral vocabulary. The trainings are carried out by the Georgian Charter of Journalistic Ethics with support of UN Women within the framework of the project “Ending Violence against Women and Girls in Georgia”, implemented by UN Women and UNFPA with the support of the European Union. Tbilisi. According to the information of the TI, a bill on the amendment to Law on the Elimination of Violence Against Women and/or Domestic Violence, and the Protection and Support of Victims of Such Violence has been introduced in the Parliament of Georgia and assigned to parliamentary committees for consideration. This legislative initiative envisages significant changes in terms of protection of rights of victims of violence. A status of victim will no longer be required for the use of shelter. Read more... Shida Kartli. On March 31, 2022, an information meeting was held at Shida Kartli Regional Hub with the representatives of the Public Defender of Shida Kartli Office. Ana Janiashvili, the main specialist spoke about the mandate of the Public Defender of Georgia. Tamar Tskhovrebadze, Representative of the Public Defender's Office on Gender Issues, made a presentation on Early Marriage. The training was held in the framework of the project “Civil Society STAR Initiative: CSOs as Sustainable, Transparent, Accountable and Resilient Development Actors in Georgia“ (2021-2025).
