Tbilisi. On February 1-3, a series of workshops were held with the Ministry of Finance of Georgia, the Ministry of Health, Labour and Social Affairs of Georgia, the Permanent Parliamentary Gender Equality Council, the Public Defender's Office of Georgia and the Parliamentary Budget Office to develop the gender index of the state budget. Adjara. Within the framework of the project Reproductive Health as a Women's Right implemented by the Solidarity Community, meetings and consultations were held on reproductive health for women living in the villages of Khulo and Shuakhevi municipalities of mountainous Adjara. The project provided both information and services necessary for reproductive health to women living in six villages of Adjara. Tbilisi. On January 21, the final event of the educational program “Women's School for Active Membership of Civil Society” was held at the Courtyard Marriott Hotel.  Within the framework of the program, young women and girls living in different regions of Georgia were trained.  At the event, 13 participants of the program presented project ideas summarizing the knowledge and skills acquired during the course, the implementation of which will contribute to solving the problematic issues in their community. Tbilisi. On December 15, in Tbilisi Marriott Hotel, a group of UN agencies, in partnership with the Georgian government and public organizations, held the first national conference on gender equality issues. Conference participants discussed issues such as increasing women's participation in politics, violence against female politicians, ways to eliminate femicide, prevention of sexual violence in peacetime and war, education as a way to overcome gender discrimination, and reforming paid parenthood. On December 1 and 2, the Human Rights Protection and Investigation Quality Monitoring Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia (MIA) held a meeting with the Task Force on Ending Violence against Women and Girls (Task Force on EVAWG). November 25 is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, which aims to raise public awareness, recognize current challenges and outline future strategies to combat violence. In addition, this day marks the beginning of the 16-day global activism against gender-based violence. Regardless of legislative and institutional changes, violence against women and domestic violence remain important challenges in Georgia. There are still many problems in terms of prevention, timely detection and effective response to the cases. Accordingly, the Public Defender of Georgia calls on the Parliament of Georgia, as well as the central and local authorities, to prioritize the implementation of the following measures: Improve sexual abuse legislation and ensure that, in accordance with international standards, the definition of sexual abuse is based on the absence of free, genuine and voluntary consent of the victim; Integrate gender equality issues into all types of education and plan awareness raising campaigns in order to raise public awareness of gender equality and domestic violence; Approve the document of national referral procedures for the identification, protection, assistance and rehabilitation of victims of violence against women and/or domestic violence; Plan appropriate projects and programmes to promote women's economic empowerment. Tbilisi. The Department of Human Rights of Ilia State University joins the 16-Day Global Campaign against Gender-Based Violence in cooperation with the USAID Rule of Law Program. The campaign, which will last from November 25 to December 10, includes various activities aimed at raising public awareness of violence against women and girls. On October 19, the representatives of Taso Foundation visited the projects of the participants of the “Women's Economic Empowerment” program in the village of Dimi, Baghdati municipality: vegetable greenhouse and a family cellar. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), UN Women, the Agrarian Issues Committee of the Parliament of Georgia, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, and the Mestia Municipality celebrated World Food Day and Rural Women's Day in Mestia on October 16-17. For this day, the farmers' agricultural market, wheat, and bread exhibition were organized in Mestia, where farmers presented various local products, including dairy products, wine, honey, and niche products. On International Day of the Girl Child UNFPA together with the EU decided to use art, a universal language to speak to parents, children and teachers about how essential gender equality is in our society and families and brought a puppet show "Esma Starts a Car” to the stage. “Esma Starts a Car” is a puppet show for girls and boys who dream, break stereotypes, want to make the world a better place and whose families are proud of their children regardless of their gender. Guria. On October 8-9, in Guria, in the village of Erketi, Chokhatauri Municipality, the "Rural Women Festival" was organized by Taso Foundation. More than 100 women from different regions joined this year's festival and presented traditional cuisine and cultural activities of their regions. Culinary master-classes, educational space for sharing photos and videos, food stations, space for singing, dancing and other cultural activities were organized at the festival. The Public Defender of Georgia established sexual harassment against a woman employed in CD Company and addressed the director of the company with a recommendation on July 5, 2022, urging him not to harass employees sexually in the future and not to create insulting, humiliating and/or degrading environment for them. Within the framework of the “Women's Economic Empowerment” project, participating women completed the training course “How to Start and Develop a Business” which was conducted by qualified trainers of BDO Academy. “As a result of the training course, women learned how to transform an idea into a business plan, financial and tax issues, branding and marketing, sales techniques and more. With UN Women’s technical support, Civil Service Bureau (CSB) adopted its first-ever internal Gender Equality Strategy and Action Plan (AP) on 6 June 2022… CSB’s Gender Equality Strategy and AP aim to strengthen gender responsive public employment systems to enable women’s full and effective participation and leadership in public service. The documents are aligned with recommendations of the participatory gender audit (PGA) conducted by CSB with UN Women’s support in 2020. Samthkhe-Javakheti. On June 8, in the village of Sviri, Akhaltsikhe Municipality, members of the Taso Foundation team conducted a training on the topic - “Self-Government - Essence, Structure and Competencies”. The training was aimed at raising awareness about the essence, structure and competencies of the self-government of new women's self-help groups in the villages of Boga and Sviri. Regions. In West Georgia, specifically in the Guria, Samegrelo and Imereti regions, the USAID YES-Georgia program visited local greenhouses, cafés, guest houses, flower shops, wine cellars, and artisan establishments to let women know about its entrepreneurship and soft skills training program. More than 60 women registered to participate in the training program. By 2024, USAID YES-Georgia aims to provide 2,600 women with greater access to quality education, training, and business development opportunities. UN Women Georgia in partnership with the Administration of the Government of Georgia is conducting capacity development training on victim-centered investigation of sexual harassment in the civil service. “The aim of this training is to strengthen capacities of public servants on effective implementation of internal complaints’ mechanisms on workplace sexual harassment, including on investigating sexual harassment cases with a victim centric approach. During the 2-day training, participants will strengthen capacities on effective operationalization of internal mechanisms on sexual harassment, including on investigation of sexual harassment cases with a victim centric approach, as well as international standards and best practices in the area. The training brings together 18 public servants from different government entities.
