Tbilisi. According to information released by the Georgian Young Lawyers’ Association, the European Court has ordered Georgia to pay 193’500 Euros for violation of rights on the IDAHO day in 2013. Court cases were handled by the Georgian Young Lawyers’ Association, the Women’s Initiatives Supporting Group, Identoba and The European Human Rights Advocacy Centre (EHRAC). “The state has been ordered to pay 193’500 Euros as a compensation in favor of applicants. At the same time, the decision envisages a number of general measures, in regard to which the complaining organizations will further communicate with the Committee of Ministers, as the international body supervising execution of decisions/judgments”. The Public Defender and an organization “Rights Georgia” have published a special report, which demonstrates results of monitoring of legal proceedings carried out at Tbilisi and Rustavi city courts. Every year, the Public Defender of Georgia joins the 16 Day sof Activism against Gender-Based Violence, which has been marked since 1991 and aims to raise public awareness of the elimination of violence against women and domestic violence. Unfortunately, the Covid 19 pandemic has further exacerbated the problematic and covert nature of domestic violence and femicide. On the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, one of the main landmarks of the Georgian capital, the TV tower, was lit up in orange once again. “With this symbolic gesture, the capital of Georgia joined the global campaign against gender-based violence. The campaign started on 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and will last for 16 days. The village of Laituri was visited by UN Resident Coordinator in Georgia Sabine Machl, UN Women Country Representative in Georgia Kaori Ishikawa and the writer Ekaterine Togonidze. “With the support of UN Women and the Government of Norway, local women opened the first bakery as well as a café and a mushroom enterprise in Laituri in 2018, bringing new life to their village. Now they already have a local NGO and are going to implement a number of initiatives for the benefit of the community. Tbilisi. According to information released by an organization “Sapari”, the UN Women Committee has published a decision on the case of Khanum Jeiranova. Jeiranova had been accused of extramarital affairs. On September 16, 2014, she was attacked by three relatives of her husband, who dragged her across the village and beat her severely. The woman was also forced by family members to commit suicide with rat poison. The mother of Jeiranova found her dead in a shed the next day: the body was hanging on a rope. Mullahs, who served the body of the woman, noted that her clothes were saturated with blood, while according to the testimony of a witness, she had been “beaten to death”. “The UN Women’s Rights Committee concluded that Georgia failed to ensure investigation and prosecution related to gender based violence as well as to violence in the name of dignity committed against a women, who was brutally beaten by family members in front of her young children, which fact resulted in her death. In the viewpoints about the violation published today, the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) expressed its concerns over the fact that the authorities of Georgia failed to ensure detention of family members of Khanum Jeiranova, the victim, and bringing them to justice for beating her to unconsciousness, as well as in regard to the decision of returning her back to relatives, after which fact she was found dead”. The event aimed at discussing draft internal anti-sexual harassment mechanism and identifying agency’s gender mainstreaming priorities. Within the framework of the workshop, participants discussed implementation of recommendations of the Participatory Gender Audit, conducted in the Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia in 2021, the adoption and effective implementation of the anti-sexual harassment mechanisms. Imereti. Social Justice Center publishes a new study: “Extractivism and economic participation of women in Tkibuli”. The study conducted by the organization reveals that Tkibuli women leave their homes due to poverty and travel to other cities and countries for work, which fact upsets the social fabric. “Apart from lacking social perspective, local women may also be at risk of domestic violence. According to one of the respondents, as long as working in mines is generally considered as a male activity and Tkibuli women act mostly as housewives, this lifestyle automatically implies financial as well as emotional dependence on others and it significantly reduces likelihood of avoiding violence.
