Tbilisi. On April 18, 2022, the Public Defender of Georgia presented a special report assessing the impact of the Covid 19 pandemic on children’s rights and the measures taken by the State. The report was prepared with the support of the UNICEF Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia (UNICEF ECARO), the UNICEF Georgia Office and the European Network of Ombudspersonsfor Children (ENOC). According to the information of the UNICEF, Children with disabilities, who previously resided in the Kojori institution will benefit from a family type environment and quality care services. European Union in Georgia publishes the blogpost: Seventeen-year-old Samay against early marriage – young activist keeps on struggling for decent education and development of her peers. “Seventeen-year-old Samaia counts herself lucky that she isn't forced to get married young. She wants other girls to have the same opportunity to finish their school and pursue further education so, she became an activist to defend their rights. The first steps of her activism started at a training organised by one of our projects. Since then, she contributes to her community, and tries to be an example for other young women”. Participants met Vivian Loonela, Head of the European Commission's Representation in Estonia. She briefed on the importance of the EU for Estonia.  Participants had an opportunity to meet Marko Mihkelson, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee. The journalists received information about the project of UNICEF and the National Association of Local Authorities.  "According to the Child Rights Code, municipalities have an important role to play in protecting and supporting children: they must be able to identify and support families and children in need, as well as identify existing social needs and address them through the development of child-friendly social programs". On April 8, in Kutaisi, at the Kutaisi Akaki Tsereteli State University, Mayors of ten municipalities gathered to discuss how to increase the involvement of municipalities to ensure the social welfare of their communities. During the meeting there was a discussion on the topic: what kind of problems youth organizations have and how we are going to solve the problems. Samegrelo. On March 16 the Child Rights Center has been inaugurated in Zugdidi Shota Meskhia State Teaching University. The event was attended by UNICEF Representative in Georgia, Ghassan Khalil. Tbilisi. A number of young volunteers, just like Mariam and her friends, were united by the desire to help the Ukrainian people. “We wanted to make some contribution to helping the Ukrainian people. We gained information about the necessary items and learned that the most critical need for the people there now was first aid medicines. We started raising money to buy first aid medicines. In a few days we raised 1400 GEL and we sent it to Ukraine”. Public Defender of Georgia calls on Government to offer Ukraine to place orphaned Children temporarily in Georgia, until improvement in situation in Ukraine. “For their part, the Public Defender and her team express their readiness to be involved in this process, both in terms of finding/evaluating and monitoring temporary host families, as well as in terms of participating in various volunteering activities, as needed. The initiative runs in partnership with the youth organization ‘Sunny House’. “On 24-30 January, participants selected for the second round attended the basic training for youth workers aimed at developing their awareness, skills and competencies”.
