Part of civil society organizations releases a statement in regard to a verdict of guilty handed down against Giorgi Rurua by the Tbilisi City Court. “The ongoing criminal case against Giorgi Rurua attracted attention of media, public and political spectrum since the day of his detention. In parallel with the court proceeding, and especially during the last period of time, critical statements were made by representatives of partner states of Georgia more frequently. In these statements, directly or indirectly, the ongoing investigation against Giorgi Rurua has been associated with political motives of the Government. Tbilisi. To tackle the impacts of COVID-19, Europe Foundation offered additional support to social enterprises previously awarded grants. Several organizations benefited from this support while dealing with the tasks facing them. “The COVID-19 pandemic weighed particularly heavily on social enterprises due, in large part, to the fact that many operate in the field of tourism or in tourism-related sectors, e.g., traditional crafts and handmade objects. Compounding this, the business models used by social enterprises focuses on employing vulnerable categories. Hence, a large part of their staff are persons with disabilities and are in COVID-19’s higher risk group. Further, social enterprises lack the skills needed to ensure digital transformations, which proved to be a key technical solution during the pandemic. Some social enterprises, however, remained flexible as they tried to navigate through the challenges. Their approaches were designed to respond effectively to the COVID-19 restrictions. The European Court of Human Rights has received and assigned a case number to the application prepared by the Human Rights Center.  The Human Rights Center applied to the ECtHR regarding the violations of Article 6.3 and Article 13 of the Convention. Today, the International Society for Fair Elections and Democracy (ISFED) presented a report related to a 2016-2019 monitoring of expenses incurred for remuneration of activities that members and employees of the Central Election Commission of Georgia performed.  The document examines regulations (salary, supplement and bonus/cash reward) and existing practice of labor remuneration for members and managers of the Central Election Commission of Georgia, members of the District Election Commission, staff and supernumeraries. Within the framework of the capacity building program Public Movement Multinational Georgia (PMMG) organized trainings for ethnic minority entrepreneurs residing in Ninotsminda, Akhalkalaki, Akhaltsikhe, Gardabani, Marneuli, and Bolnisi Municipalities.  During the training highly qualified and experienced experts introduced the participants to the stages and ways of developing, planning and implementing a business plan. Tbilisi. A shipment of medical respirators, masks, goggles, face shields and gowns to enable health-care workers in Georgia to continue to respond effectively and safely to the COVID-19 pandemic arrived in the country this week. The delivery of up to 1.5 million pieces of personal protective equipment, funded by the European Union and procured by WHO, includes 5,000 faceshields, 13,200 protective goggles, 30,000 isolation gowns, 1,000,000 medical masks and 328,000 respirator masks. This is one of the largest cargos of protective equipment to arrive in Georgia with donor support. These supplies will safeguard those in the frontlines of the COVID-19 response, and ensure that the health system is well prepared in case of additional needs in the near future. On July 21-22, within the framework of a field working meeting, an Open Government Permanent Parliamentary Council and members of an Advisory Group, operating under the Council, discussed submitted initiatives aiming to elaborate an Action Plan of the Open Parliament of Georgia for 2020-2021 years. The working meeting was conducted within the framework of the European Union (EU) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) project – “Consolidating Parliamentary Democracy in Georgia”. At the working meeting, recommendations and proposals in regard to commitments under the action plan were presented by representatives of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the Institute for Development of Freedom of Information (IDFI), USAID/GGI, the National Democratic Institute (NDI), the Georgian Young Lawyers’ Association (GYLA), Transparency International Georgia (TI) and Public Defender of Georgia. Proposed initiatives aim at enhancing openness of activities of the legislative body as well as increasing proactivity and transparency of lawmaking and oversight activities of the Parliament.
