The European Court of Justice, Europe’s highest court, has ruled that ‘lex CEU’ violates Hungary’s commitments under the WTO, and infringes the provisions of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union relating to academic freedom. The judgment from the European Court of Justice in Commission v Hungary (C-66/18) related to the Hungarian law amending the 2017 Law on higher education. The Court agreed with the European Commission that Hungary has breached WTO law, EU law and the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union “relating to academic freedom, the freedom to found higher education institutions and the freedom to conduct a business.” Today’s decision means that Lex CEU is no longer applicable. CEU is free to operate its US degree programs in Budapest. It is also an important moral and legal victory as well as a historic victory for academic freedom in Europe. Read more... The 44 students (out of over 300 applicants), representatives of the public, private and non-governmental sectors, will deepen their knowledge on anti-corruption issues and acquire the skills of effective response against the facts of corruption. Tbilisi. With the support of UN Women, Public Defender's Office has conducted online seminars on gender-sensitive reporting and media standards. Participants of the seminar have been introduced to the standards of ethical and non-discriminatory, gender-sensitive reporting including femicide reporting. On September 3, Education Development and Employment Center (EDEC) held an online intellectual game – What? Where? When? within the framework of EU-funded Project – Civil Society Sustainable Initiative (CSSIGE) on the topics of volunteering and civic activism. "The game was broadcasted LIVE via the FACEBOOK page of Timerepublik Georgia – the first time bank in Georgia. The intellectual game aims to raise awareness of volunteering and civic activism among the public, especially among Georgian youth. Tbilisi. On August 14, the Civil Society Institute (CSI) conducted its 16th meeting and, thus, concluded awarding of winners of a high school seniors competition “This Country is Yours” as well as meetings with young people in regions. Awarding of winning teams from Tbilisi is going to be held in September. The last stage of the competition is a super final, in which one team from each region, including Tbilisi, will take part. The super finale envisages gathering for 2-3 days, interesting meetings, as well as quizzes and will be planned in accordance with the epidemic situation. The competition “This country is yours” was carried out throughout the country and about 150 teams participated in it. The winning students and their curator-teachers were given laptops, face masks, maps, notebooks, and an almanac “Freedom, Justice and Democracy in Georgian Thought” as gifts... Public meetings with young people were conducted by well-known writers, publishers, journalists and education experts. They talked about civic values, activities of civil society organizations, civic responsibility, activism and education. The social campaign “This Country is Yours” is carried out within the framework of the “Civil Society Sustainability Initiative” project, implemented by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS) in collaboration with the Civil Society Institute (CSI), the Center for Training and Consultancy (CTC), the Center for Strategic Research and Development of Georgia (CSRDG) and the Education Development and Employment Center (EDEC). Tbilisi. The Public Defender applied to the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport of Georgia with a proposal in regard to taking into consideration religious needs while organizing the Unified National Examinations. The Office of the Public Defender studied the issue in the context of the right to freedom of religion as well as equality and found that the legislation, regulating the Unified National Examinations, does not provide applicants with an opportunity to express their religious needs during the registration process. Furthermore, there is no mechanism to take aforementioned into consideration while in the process of organizing examinations. According to the appraisal of the Public Defender, applicants, who were forced to refuse to take an exam on a particular day due to their own religious belief, were in an unequal position with respect to those applicants, whose religion is of different views on similar issues. Education Development and Employment Center (EDEC) held Professional Guidance and Career Planning CV Training for the IDPs and conflict-affected youth residing in Shida Kartli and Samegrelo regions.  In total 323 people attended the “CV Training”. The participants learned CV and cover letter writing tools. In addition, they were informed about employer communication stages and effective job interview techniques.
